Women were clearly at the core of legendary photographer Helmut Newton's work. The stars of his iconic portraits and fashion editorials – from Catherine Deneuve to Grace Jones, Charlotte Rampling to Isabella Rossellini – finally give their own interpretation of the life and work of this controversial genius. A portrait by the portrayed. Provocative, unconventional, subversive, his depiction of women still sparks the question: were they subjects or objects?

He was a little bit pervert but so am I so it's okay. His pictures are erotic but with dimension. It was never vulgar, always in beautiful taste not something to take away from the story. - Grace JonesGrace and Dolph's photos were the first of Newtons work I ever saw so I'm happy to hear Grace has happy memories of the shoot!
When you ask Helmut to take on an assignment...hopefully iconic, maybe sometimes disturbing but certainly thought provoking. So maybe you may have considered it brave but I personally considered it necessary.- Anna WintourGod, I wish you still felt this way Anna, American Vogue is so fucking boring.
