Distinctly weird, but in a fun way. In a franchise that tries to steal from Godzilla at every turn, it seems Gamera was first to do the “pilot a submarine inside a body” trope.
I do wish these movies didn’t pivot so hard into being about children. The best Gamera movie was about a man who murdered all of his friends in his effort to get rich, and since then it’s been 10 year old boys who just want to help the big friendly turtle.
Jiger is kinda cool though. I like the commitment to quadrupeds, and injecting offspring into other monsters is something that should have been done before. Plus it gives us a little Jiger to run around inside of Gamera. It’s good!
