Suspenseful, entertaining, full of surprising twists and turns, and above all, human. The subtle characterization during moments of cherishing butter or sharing a smoke make the consistent conflict between characters complicated, compelling, and ultimately truly tragic. The character work was some of the best I’ve seen in early film so far and the commentary about the enemies that are made of regular people during war remains poignant today. There was also plenty of interesting camerawork, stunning special effects, and engrossing acting to round out the entertainment value of this great movie. I rolled my eyes at a few of the female lead’s lines and there were perhaps too many characters to keep track of and too much focus on submarine mechanics, making the finale feel slightly clunky, but overall the movie comes together really well.
