The subtext of this movie is very much of its era, but it did give Bergman a chance to show off what makes her great for the first time. Have always been fascinated by performers who can communicate raw emotion in a more fabricated environment. At this point in the timeline of cinema, the majority of what we had was studio work, crafted narratives that were designed to entertain. There was usually only room for very specific types of performance. What made me want to do a complete watch through of Bergman was her ability to bypass that in a sense. She’s able to give the movie exactly what it requires to be successful and yet still hold something so much more intriguing underneath. A beacon of light for character driven performance. Seeing that so early on is exciting.
