Another very polarized anime movie, containing strong themes, development, characters, dialogue, and emotions, but on the other hand has weak storytelling, plot-points, and parallels. I’ll start with the strongest, the character development and dialogue, the 3 leads are super likeable and easy to root for, their tragic backstories do a good job tying and bringing them together. I especially enjoyed Yui, she could do no wrong and was always there for the people she loved, I like her backstory and was happy when got away from her father. As for Hiyori, it’s mostly the same and the pair of these 2 girls gave us some really emotional scenes when they were able to be alone and bond. I love the themes here, really the only one that worked was the theme of fate, every direction the movie went can be tied back to it and the 3 characters do well developing it even more. Now the big problem I had for this is the plot and story, not gonna go too much into it but they are just very surface and boring, and by the end get to the point of derivative from many movies. The whole fantasy and sci-fi aspects, while necessary to progress the plot, felt out of place and went a little too far sometimes. The parallels were also kinda confusing, it felt like the story was folding in on itself, which didn’t completely ruin it for me, especially in a more character driven movie, but could’ve been improved. All around In loved whenever it was about the 3 girls and the opposite when it wasn’t.
I will add, 2 things really annoyed me while watching. The first being the scene pacing, at times it was extremely slow, and while it was the place for it, for sure went too long. The other being the subtitles, while the dub was great I hated that anytime Hiyori would pull out the notepad there was no subtitle for it, at least for me, this definitely took away some possible great development and emotions for Hiyori, but it’s not a huge deal.
The positives do outweigh the negatives here but I can’t go to four stars just based on how much it’s lacking, but it is a blast.
