“The Personals” is a painful slog of a movie about a self-destructive woman named Wu(Rene Liu) who goes on an almost never-ending series of dates after she posts an ad for a marriage partner. These date scenes are a torture to sit through as virtually every suitor she meets treats her terribly or she allows them to. The biggest offense comes in the end, which is just about the most reductive and sexist shit I’ve seen in a long time. One and a half stars for Rene Liu, who tries her darnedest to keep things afloat.
