Apart of the Japanese urban legend franchise of “Kuchisake-onna,” also known as the “Slit-Mouthed Woman,”
Surprisingly, I found this movie quite good. Despite its conspicuous low-budget. I think I enjoyed this movie as much as I did because I grew up watching videos about Japanese urban legends. The story starts with high school students, Mayumi Sawada (Rin Asuka) and Seiji Moriyama (Akihiro Mayama). I found out about this movie whilist looking for another movie, so because of that, I was completely unaware of the original. In the beginning, I was confused about how this seemed to be coming of age story could be turned into a horror. But once it happens, the tension escalates significantly. This film delves into Mayumi’s psychological breakdown after her sister, Sachiko,(Yukie Kawamura) ex-boyfriend, Suzuki, pours acid all over Mayumis face, thinking that she’s Sachiko. In the process, rumors start to escalate around the family and Mayumi, driving them mad. Ultimately, everything comes full circle with some surprising twists that make the experience rewarding for low-budget J-horror enthusiasts.
