Indie British films have a very special atmosphere to them.
I've watched both "Treacle Jr" and "The Low Down" from James Thraves and you can notice how the director likes to tell his stories.
It's very intimate, getting to know theses characters is a crazy adventure. The movie seems a bit confusing at first, but after a few minutes you start to understand what's going on.
Aidan Gillen plays a very interesting character, you can easily go from finding him annoying to sympathizing with him. The character named Aidan is a mentally handicapped man whom you would probably ignore in real life, but while we get to know him more, we see a side of him where he shows us a different perspective on life. That's where our other protagonist comes in.
Tom is a very troubled man who left his wife and kid cause he couldn't really cope with his life anymore. He's very depressed and doesn't have anywhere to go, he has no hope on life whatsoever, only going day by day afraid.
Unexpectedly he meets Aidan, and it's really funny how he tries to get away from him, cause that's usually what a normal person would try to do. But Aidan is a person of free will who doesn't have much to do in his life, having a similarity with Tom.
While the movie is really funny, it also shows you very deep thoughts of the characters and how problematic they are. It criticizes how much we expect to make something out of life, when happiness can be simple and already in front of you. In my perspective, it can also teach the viewer the way optimism affects someone's way of living, taking Aidan and Tom as examples of two very different but also similar people.
Overall, it's a nice piece of work, sure
