It feels inappropriate for me to critique this documentary which features the stories of Holocaust survivors. What Bernard Marks says towards the end will truly stick with me, as will the personal stories, and footage played throughout.
...But I must say that I thought the documentary itself to be lacking. The editing was so strange; chopping and changing between translations of the survivors talking and readings of exerts from memoirs with little to no differentiation between the two. I always favour subtitles rather than dubbings (especially when real people are telling their stories, it feels more impactful for their real voices to be heard (both figuratively and literally)), and this was absolutely no exception; the American movie-trailer voice felt so jarring and almost AI generated with the pacing that it genuinely detracted from what was being said. The music also felt like it had been picked at random.
Yeah idk. I don't like to complain about these sorts of things, especially when it comes to such sensitive topics, but I think these topics need to be handled with a bit more care and discernment than this. Definitely better documentaries out there.
