I love myself a good prison-setting movie, and this one is just completely different and totally unique (in a good way). Most prison films I know are set in the USA, so it’s nice to see something different. I don’t know if it’s accurate to real-life, but the crowded Mexican jail here works so well and is so much fun to watch. The fact that there is a clear hierarchy also makes this film much more interesting.
The conflict in this movie isn’t any less interesting, with our protagonist having both internal and external problems. And when writing this, I just realized our main character doesn’t even have a name, but lowkey that makes this film even cooler. I really enjoyed the action sequences, and the film just gets more and more exciting without losing its momentum. I think my main problem was the amount of subplots there is, with its 90-ish minutes runtime. Though it did add a bit of depth, I was lost at certain points in the film (mostly regarding those cowboys and the American prison helper guy, but also the excruciating amount of names and how those antagonists are somehow all cousins).
But even though some aspects were kinda confusing for me, there’s just so much other sequences that I love and made up for it. I love the relationship between our protagonist with the kid and the mom (as I’m writing this I also just realized the kid doesn’t even have a name?!?). I was also totally shocked when the kid started stabbing his liver, didn’t know what I expected but it was definitely not that. And I’m so happy the three of them got their happy ending, that dream at the end was also so funny. There were still so many cool montages including the CEO-bomb (absolute fire, I laughed when he pulled out the umbrella).
So I’d say Get The Gringo is a pretty solid action movie and I definitely enjoyed this more than I expected to. Despite being kinda confusing at certain parts, there’s a uniqueness to the plot makes it super enjoyable to watch.
