Some fantastic set design, especially in the trenches, but you've got to assume the script was rejected by Mitchell and Webb for being too based on stereotypes.
"It can't be done sir, well, not by thon southern jesses. Tha couldn't mine theeself out a wet paper bag wi a jackhammer. Who knows Flanders clay better than a Yorkshire lad like meself sir?"
In terms of characters and development, one is noble but rough, one is rough and brave, one is not brave but then is brave. The officers are uncaring, except one, who is actually kind behind his stiff upper lip. Groundbreaking.
Overall, interesting to see a side of the war not covered in previous films, but to put it into mining terms, this movie is all shaft and no explosion.
