elderly white women and one gay man treating competitive table setting at the county fair like it’s the olympics. what could be a better premise for a documentary? i truly love finding out about intense niche subcultures i previously knew nothing about.
unfortunately nothing in this documentary surprises me too much because i grew up in orange county and worked at a homegoods as a teenager. i wouldn’t be surprised if i rang up one of these women at the cash register. it’s their exact demographic.
at one point, one of the women goes into a sensory deprivation tank to get ideas for her table and comes out of it with the vision of a dinner table that promotes an anti-big game hunting message complete with taxidermy animals, real bullet casings, and blood. it is AMAZING. unironically i didn’t realize table setting could be an art form that functions as a vehicle for awareness of societal issues. i fear next summer i may be going down to the OC fair to see these women’s art in person.
also whoever edited this should have an oscar for editing within their lifetime because it was so fun and added SO MUCH LIFE to this documentary.
