While not exactly groundbreaking, it does predate Ninja Scroll by years and taps into that specific vein of hyper violent teen boy anime. Its animation is unpolished and at times rudimentary, but if you're like me, you'll take that authentic imperfection over polished modern stuff any day. The plot is exceedingly simple. A streamlined pace makes sure we waste little time on unnecessary story.
I'm a big fan of villains and this one is pretty good. Both the main big bad, Yukimura, and his gang of minions are all fun with entertaining abilities. Yukimura himself, especially floating head version in episode 1, looks great. These guys really bring the violence with severed limbs and eyeball popping for your pleasure.
I wouldn't recommend this to any anime fan, but if you are a fan of the vintage stuff or raised on it, this would be an easy win. It's bordering on long for a single watch, but it's broken up episodically.
