Cryptic, elliptical, hypnagogic, and truly maddening, this direct-to-video erotic thriller looks like some schlocky trash but bizarrely is way more idiosyncratic and oneiric than you'd think. Love is a Gun turns the erotic thriller on its head by venturing down the surrealist psychological tunnel and it ends up coming out the other end looking like a David Lynch film filtered through the perverted lens of Brian De Palma. Or maybe it's De Palma filtered through Lynch? Either way, this is basically one of those guys doing one of the other guys' films. Is this a reductive way of viewing Love is a Gun? Yes. Do I know how else to explain this? Not in the slightest. Eric Roberts does a freakout like no one else.
