Im contractually obligated to watch every single movie about the self indulgent, self destructive creative-type - despite how terrible. And most of them are. Because- especially in this case- this genre isn’t easy to do without coming off as a narc or a wannabe.
Its the latter for MGK for sure. He can say its a cautionary tale as much as he wants but the truth is that he wanted to “look cool” on screen and appear to be some tortured genius. He’s neither- at most a Kurt Cobain aesthetic cosplayer for the TikTok era. Other than having good cheekbones, I’m failing to see the appeal— or even the ability to even land dialogue. He speaks like its the first table read on the script. ( Thank god for Maddie Hasson to balance it out)
Visually, this is eye-catching & smooth. (Same cinematographer (Josh Brawley) as the actually watchable movie; *A Perfect Host).
*The story is by the numbers and padded with awful meandering dialogue . But hey, SCOOT MCNAIRY shows up and that was nice .
