The front half of this is a lot more intriguing than the back half and it is a bit long in the tooth getting to its resolution. A real high point for me is that the casting is crazy in this. Shoutout to them NAILING the evil magistrate guy, the lawyer who is Russian but loves French, and the psycho kid killer spetznaz guy. Now I’m not too sure what the message I’m supposed to get out of this. Governments/ specifically Russias will falsely blackmail people they deem as enemies? That we should all be more like the priest or his lady friend and help people going through blackmail? That a nation will weigh your life against their greater political standing when considering if they can get you back to the homeland? Me my takeaway and the main thing I cannot shake is the gall of this man. The absolute audacity and aloof nature it must take to put on a wildly gay by Russian standards play and not think you would be blacklisted. Sure at home playing princess that’s like in your privacy if the cleaning lady sells you out that’s a tough break but this man legit threw a super French super artsy super gay play in small city Russia. Me personally I’m not doing that I don’t want the FSB knocking down my doors and hauling me off to jail. I would be a smart traveler recognize where I am in the world and that they are NOT tolerant of western culture and I would behave myself. Of course if that happens we don’t have a movie but it did bother me just how in the clouds this fella was.
