Lynch by way of mumblecore, Giving Birth to a Butterfly's exploration of identity, motherhood, and repeated traumas has a whimsical air to it that makes it wholly unique. The oddity of the whole ordeal makes for an engrossing watch even if I didn't necessarily jive with some of the moments of stillness. The dialogue sensibilities make it feel like a radio play at times, especially in the latter half of the film, adding to a surreal tone as characters struggle to choose themselves when they have no idea what "themself" is
