This isn't mumblecore coming back, but rather the mini-DV simply being a means of doing something quick and doing something dirty and doing something simple. As a current Floridian who wishes to fucking leave the state and live elsewhere, I understand the appeal of the city and the naivety of thinking people there will "be better", but when you are young and woefully unprepared for social life you will quickly find how similar people are everywhere and how a city can exacerbate everything you hate in others if you are not already willing to find stuff you like in other people. The comedy of it all is built on hypocrisy. Everyone in the film is by some measure a hypocrite and the various vices people indulge in make for escapist measures away from how shitty a place can be. You can scream for help but no one will come for you, the city can feel as empty as an open field if you are coming in with your guard up
