Director- Kurehara Koreyoshi. This is the first film I have seen of his. I don't know how well this film describes his filmography. The protagonist of the film is a spineless, good-for-nothing screw-up who always does things by the book and is thus far from successful. He is timid, which is exploited by people in his office and by his wife at home. She cheats on him with an old flame, who is his superior at work. That superior is only successful because he has married a higher-up's daughter. The film revolves around the superior trying to get free from his blackmailer, who has proof of his unlawful activities regarding loans.I thought that the film will be about the protagonist's final victory like in a standard underdog film but it one upped it with a different approach. The events of his attempted and failed bank robbery maintained a great deal of suspense. But after this, the film still has a good twist with the protagonist getting a golden opportunity to screw him over.He decides to play the long game and not hand him over to the authorities, but instead blackmail him for money till either of them dies. This works against his favour as we see at the end, the police have caught up to the superior. Now the ending is open-ended, and thus it is on our imagination whether he gets caught or the protagonist lives a better life.I think that the superior was caught at the end and the protagonist has now lost everything. The runtime of the film is incredibly short, but it could have been used a bit better with fleshing out some characters more.Overall, this is good as an intro to the director.
