after five years of chasing this film through missed screenings and dead ends, i finally caught it. i found a ticket for an online screening and didn't waste my chance at all. was it my last $10? absolutely. was it worth it? i’d pay another $10 to watch it once again.
this is the real queer and mental health representation we absolutely NEED in burmese media right now. with all the censorship that’s been happening over the past few years, or even decades really, this film by far feels the most rawest and most genuine form of rep i’ve seen in a while.
again, maybe it’s just my burmese pride being biased, but this film was very personal in a way that i didn't even expect it to be at all!
the cinematography was a hit or miss at some parts but i really loved the widescreen shots since they had this liminal in-between feeling that worked really well with the mood of the film which kinda makes up for the dialogue that feels a bit rough around the edges.
hearing the burmese while reading the eng subtitles was kinda weird since i soon realized the translation can’t fully grasp the actual nuance of what’s being said. it feels a bit cliché and surface-level at times, circling around in loops without much progression, but overall, it was a great experience. (paing phyo thu’s acting was phenomenal!!! i believe this might just be her magnum opus).
i literally felt whiplash when ma khan naing buu by myo kyawt maung and doe lone started playing during that first montage. it’s one of my favorite songs, and hearing it again during the end credits just left me completely appalled (i might have shed a tear or two). so i obviously had to cave and give it four stars for the soundtrack alone.
at the end of the day, i’m officially broke now, but at least my heart is now full and my taste in music has been validated.
