Was reached out by First-Name Films for an early screening of Mean Spirited and thank you again m, because Found Footage is my favorite sub genre for horror and I enjoyed this one.
The problem with found footage horror movies recently have been an identity crisis of trying to be new and original where lately it’s been a rehash of what we’ve seen many many times before.
Mean Spirited has an identity and it’s fun, fresh, and a little eerie. Like others have mentioned this movie is similar in tone to the likes of “Deadstream” and the not so mentioned “Followed”. The vlog style approach they use in this movie may make or break the viewing experience for a lot of viewer. But I think the juxtaposition of the early YouTube heavy edited technique paired with the tonal shift of seeing the true colors of our characters really makes for am enjoyable watch.
Where the horror doesn’t land the comedy definitely makes up for. Personally I hate cults so I’m biased in terms of what scares me but I found it was a good blend.
Ultimately, if you’re a fan of the found footage horror sub genre this is a fun watch with well acted characters, an actual deep message of friendship, and a fresh take on the YouTube vlog style of found footage
