I find it so funny that Shane will reduce the amount of racism, sexism, body shaming with each film - but there’s always one joke brutally making fun of someone who’s homeless.
The best way to describe this short film is that it’s a slightly edgy, feel good, late 90s The Goldbergs-esque film. I also remembered this being a concept for a series that he was trying to pitch to studios, so it explains why scene transitions were kinda awkward. And I think he could’ve achieved that series if it weren’t for the edgy humour, and The Goldbergs for existing.
Before rewatching this, I saw a YouTube video reviewing it and them claiming that Shane wasn’t poor, and this kinda baffled me because it’s a story about a boy watching TV with no cable, living with his single mum and grandmother, a real estate agent judging their wealth, and eating ready made foods for dinner. But after rewatching it, there’s a lot of say but not show - which will make anyone feel skeptical about his upbringing.
I think I rewatched all of Shane Dawson Short Films now. Conclusion:
• There’s definitely an improvement in quality with each film.
• A lot of the production is carried by Michael Gallagher.
• His films are better when there’s one set story in mind. Adding B plots really mess with his production.
• It’s becoming less offensive with each film (but slowly). It makes me wonder what a new movie of his would look like.
• Shane hates homeless people.
