Ryan has actually been one of my film teachers and since he is probably my most influential film teacher with all the help he has given me, I feel very bad giving this any lower than 4 stars, so I’m gonna justify the rating with constructive criticism so he knows I mean well (and i guess he did provide constructive criticism for my shorts which helped me grow so maybe i’m becoming the teacher🤔).
The comedy was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I think a lot of the reacurring gags and especially the background gags were awesome and made me laugh (Mama was wonderful), but at the same time I feel like the movie had trouble letting jokes go. There were a few times where the joke would start out funny but after being drawn out for upwards of 30 seconds the joke got old. I think this movie is much stronger with its short recurring gags than it is the long single use ones.
While the cinematography was actually quite great with some wonderful production design, I feel like the weird color grading brought it down for me. There was some weird over-saturation, especially when outside and it often took me out. That’s not to discredit the great framing and very attentive production design that often added to or created gags, just something I couldn’t help but notice.
This is personal and very subjective, but I couldn’t stand the best friend character and whenever she was on screen I enjoyed the film less. Just my taste though.
All around solid comedic performances. Sometimes the actors felt pretty amateur, or didn’t quite hit a line, but overall mostly pretty good.
I really didn’t like who the main character ended up with. It didn’t feel built up to at all, and it just simply felt like he just happened to be the only guy she knew and not because there was any connection between them. It felt like a very unnatural way to end the arc and i think it could have been fixed with some light foreshadowing throughout the film.
The ending was quite drawn out and it felt like it just kept ending over and over again. I don’t think we needed that much closure for each and every plot point, some stuff could have been left ambiguous, because as is it just felt like the movie ended 3 times.
Great editing. Loved the split screens and the music queues and the way scenes were cut.
Overall it was definitely a fun time but I just wanted to give my constructive feedback. It is all my personal opinion of course and I don’t think any of this needed to be changed, I just would have enjoyed it more if it had been. I think what Ryan did was awesome and inspiring and I’m very excited to see what he does next!
