this is an incredible story, for something that happened 100 years ago blows my mind that it was even possible that they all survived, but yet there is some negatives. There was about 5 mins at the end of the movie of them actually talking about the shipwreck + the ai recreation of Shackleton and his crew’s voices (ill come back to this) + the combination of ai videos and real actors making it seem like half is bullshit and the half being the truth, like get some actors and recreate the story can’t be that hard. Like this is one of the GREATEST SURVIVAL STORIES IN HUMAN HISTORY. like cmon. Back to the ai voices reading out their diary entries, like why can’t u get actual actors. just mislead the story, and makes it sound fake.

I would have liked more context in this. I feel in an effort to tell the story of the endurance, there was a big gap of history from the moment the crew got back to the UK to the 2019 expedition details (however brief) that just seemed to be missing. It devalued the cultural resonance of the Endurance and I think I would have had more emotional investment in this.

I also would have liked a little more external worldbuilding on the modern segments of this to really leveridge the conditions of the crew on the Endurance. Introducing the characters of the discovery was greatly welcomed, but they seemed secondary.

Just in how this was constructed also, the recorded audio from the crew is a valuable way to tell the story. Without the context of the story it seemed a bit odd.

I know Im picking apart a lot of things here. I really did think it was interesting, but I reckon I just didnt want this condensed into one short documentary. Fascinating as it is.

I’m abit torn on this film. Is it fun? Yes. Is it smart? Yes. But I’m torn on the use of AI. I think it’s a super cool use of AI to voice the actual explorers, but the morality or ethics of it is abit skewed.
