I watched the first part and i immediately had to place this as one of my favorites. When I showed my father dunkirk and 1917 respectively he wasn’t necessarily impressed with the scale of either film. A quality that I adored about those two movies. Then within the first 15-20 mins, the film shows me why he wasn’t impressed. The absolute scale and the amount of extras on these giant landscapes is something I’ve never seen before. There was also a scene where we both cried within the first half hour which is damn impressive. Also this director has a technique that I would love to implement myself and have been dreaming about since I was a child. The camera at times seems to be omnipresent (the only way I could describe it) it’s larger than life, far above the fighting, almost as the camera is a god-like figure watching from the clouds above, unknown to the characters of the film. With it executed here both with enormous fight set pieces and dialogue between two characters, I absolutely love it. I don’t think the second half will diminish my score with the but it may be knocked off of my top 4, as the first half ended with a freeze frame, something I’m not fond of. But I am very optimistic and could nitpick things I love about the first half for hours just on a first watch.
