Stranger at the Gate

i am trying to move away from my initial perhaps carceral flinchings at this concept to appreciate the film as a whole. i don't know if i can. the islamic community of muncie has extended an incredible and radical length of forgiveness. this is probably a more compelling thesis than that of reformed hatred (which in the aftermath of the tiki torch march on charlottesville i grow increasingly weary of). i cannot imagine myself in the position of any of the people involved. is that what makes it a good story to tell? should i be evaluating it on that premise alone? i don't know.

another thing i thought was interesting... i feel it says a lot that the final straw for the man's ex-wife was not him being violent and islamophobic, but him converting to islam. lol.

It has a weird pace, construction, and visuals. It has a good message, and I'm glad this guy got unindoctrinated, but he just seems strange even in the interviews from today. 'I don't think I'll ever forgive myself' and 'to save one life is to save all of humanity' like just seems pretty fake but thats just the vibes I'm get just a bit strange all in all.

for a significant portion of this, i genuinely thought we were rehabbing a mass murderer. but since he only planned it, i guess he basically saved their lives then right???
