Does it feel like a tv movie? yeah. does it have a “yay we solved racism in an hour and a half” feel? kinda? but wow!! I really loved this. This Disney movie has BALLS.
Loved how it focused almost solely on the family’s struggle and not about teaching the white people about racism all the time. Loved the dad’s transformation from not understanding the need for integration to embracing it. Loved the mom’s feelings of regret of what they’ve put their daughter through, but ultimately understanding the sacrifice would help so many.
Kevin Pollack plays the “white man who learns about racism” role, but you learn so much more about Ruby through that than him and that’s why I think it works. Same with the teacher. You learn about systemic racism through her, not her personal stance against racism.
The real lesson here is black women need to tell black women’s stories!!
