god i fucking love spider-man

This was everything I could’ve asked for and more for a Spider-Man film.
It just gets the character so well like we haven’t seen in live action since Spider-Man 2.
It has some of the best action sequences which you can feel were inspired by the recent games and my god they look incredible.
Peter’s relationship with Frank is probably the highlight for me they just play off each other so well.
And it’s probably the best hulk we’ve had since the first avengers film I reckon too.
Entire 3rd act is just something to behold and Sadie Sink along with Tom Holland are fantastic.
Zendaya too wow there’s one scene in specific which is top tier.
Give Destin Daniel Cretton the keys immediately.

the most recent installment of tom holland's spiderman arc left me feeling heartwarmed, filled with laughter, and... a bit disappointed at the extent to which this movie that feels like setup for doomsday

i'm gonna try to write this without spoilers at all

the last installment left us in a very specific spot, and i actually think BND picks up perfectly from that point. the intense longing we're strapped into is the perfect starting point for some great emotional character beats — something i think the holland spidermans' are historically very good at

but the emotional release that we all want from this movie we can't really have — it'd be too corny to artificially resolve the unfinished business of NWH, and i'm glad they didn't do that. so we're left with a kind of half release. and then, to be frank, the other half of the plot is kinda half assed and not really tied to the peter-ned-mj half. it really feels like they're working backwards from doomsday in the writers room

"we need to introduce characters X and Y, we need to set up for a big cathartic moment with peter and MJ, we need to establish this new friendship"

you don't really get this feeling until the end of the movie, though, when the emotional beat they're going for with that one character and the sniper rifle doesn't really hit. if a character's trying to kill you and then 30 seconds later they're trying to save you, you better have really set up for that moment

instead it feels corny and you'll roll your eyes. and then you'll look back at the whole script and go "ah, yeah, this is setup for doomsday"

anyway. i don't love that. probably my least favorite tom holland spider-man — but it's still a really fun ride. they know how to make these movies well

and wow is tom holland shredded. body tea. good thing they wrote like 5 scenes for the express purpose of him being shirtless. thank you for your service
