It’s the 70s and the city of Los Angeles is under threat from a Mad Bomber. No, not Kevin Sheedy, former Boston Celtic Chuck Conners!
Conner is a prototype D-Fens, an upright Karen stalking the streets and berating folks for littering, failing to recognise pedestrian crossing etiquette and overcharging him 12 cents for a can of beans. He takes out his anger of these everyday inconveniences, and his lingering grief from the death of his daughter, but blowing up universities and hospitals. Because it’s an important to have a creative outlet.
Vince Edward’s is a detective tasked with tracking our man, with choice dialogues cuts like:
*‘Turn the other way. If I’ve got to look at your face for ten consecutive seconds I’ll blow your brains out ‘
*
Conner is great here, buttoned up yet unhinged at the same time, the explosions are decent considering the low budget, and it’s fun to delve into the fashion and look of the era. The inherent machoness is cringe, yet entertaining it is own ‘did they really just do that’ way. There actually was a mad bomber- George Metesky who terrorised NYC in the 40s and 50s with his DIY explosives!
