I have yet to see a bad film at the Wisconsin Film Festival! This showing was jam packed, which made for great viewing. Harmony & Me is a film about a boy’s yearning in life - not just in love - though that’s what the central plot is about. Harmony is a twenty-something who is been dumped by his girlfriend and has a sort of “mid-life crisis.” Shot in a cinema verite fashion, this film jumps from moment to moment, seemingly without rhyme or reason - but that’s sort of the beauty of this film. It feels raw - like his emotions (even though he seems to take them to the extreme). The dialogue is filled with wry, witty humor - but it doesn’t feel forced, like in films like Juno. The characters’ bantering back and forth is really what makes this film hilarious!
After the screening the director came on stage for a little Q&A - and I was surprised to see that it was actually the actor who played Harmony’s dry and mean-spirited brother. As he answered questions, you quickly learned where the film gets its humor from. He is funny in a very ironic kind of way. He had the audience laughing just answering questions about his film. Ah-Mazing!
