every time a character commits an evil deed, another character will yell at them and say, “no, this isn’t you!”

Make your protagonist likeable challenge: Impossible
The show seemed to go out of its way to make Riri make terrible decisions and be selfish as often as possible. And just when I thought they might be setting her up for an arc, she denies it by literally making a deal with the fucking devil. And that's the end of the season, leaving the story unresolved. Did they think this would get renewed, out of all the MCU shows that didn't get second seasons? Wow.
I don't know what show everyone else watched. I really wanted it to be good. But I just could not get behind Riri. I liked Nat a lot, I liked the sorceress in training, I liked that neighborhood kid. But I cannot get behind Riri as she's characterized here.
Here's Riri's journey through the 6 episodes.
- She complains about not getting to do anything she wants at MIT (even though they let her build a giant Iron Man suit), gets kicked out of MIT for breaking their #1 rule of no plagiarism and basically hospitalizing her professor, then she complains about getting kicked out of the school she didn't like in the first place.
- She doesn't try to apply to another university or ask for independent research grants, even though she interned for the Black Panther and built her own Iron Man suit. Instead she decides to follow some shady guy who knew her even though she didn't know him, follow him to an abandoned building where he and his gang almost kill her with Poison gas, and then she decides to join them in criminal exploits, disregarding the above events, because they can give her money.
- She goes on a heist, not knowing why they're breaking into this place, watches the gang leader shoot a guy, and leaves him on the ground.
- She decides to do another heist because they can give her money, and literally kills a guy.
- Then she decides it's finally hero time, and goes after the gang leader, the hood, to take away his cloak for his own good, since making a deal with the devil corrupted him and made him too dangerous.
- Then, immediately after defeating the Hood, she makes a deal with the devil herself???
Brilliant. What a stand-up, admirable superhero. Iron Man had character flaws, but only made bad decisions comparable to this in Civil War, when he was characterized as an antagonist. Riri is supposed to be the hero of this story. It's ok to make her the worst person in the world at the beginning, but there needs to be a catalyst to enact change, and she should change at the end, or at least recognize that she's making a bad decision and not changing, making it a tragedy. This was- I don't even know. Just a bad story. Jeez. At least it was shot well and the suit looked cool and all the side characters were fun.

Unfortunately all the characters except Riris mum sucked in this. Very irritating dialogue and tonedeaf direction - you can tell from the very commercial-esque royalty free ass rap music they chuck over the credits, if nothing else (some 65 year old white producer thought that made it seem "hip").
My biggest frustration is that Riri has multiple moments where she supposedly is confronted about or confronts her own behaviour and yet never changes. It pisses me off because this shouldve been her time to shine as a new, cool, young character; instead she came across as annoying, rude, and whiney.
Bad - 3/10

first of all, i was so excited to watch this and see my boy lawroyce and he’s fucking dead???😭 lmao
hell of a good show! every single episode was great. loved the soundtrack, the colors, the performances, and the action scenes. the way they displayed the ‘Ironheart’ title in every episode was very satisfying to watch.
i don’t necessarily agree with riri all the time but i like her! she’s so talented and cool. i was so excited every time she got in her suit :]
i’m so sorry but parker was literally so cool??? the greenhouse thing and him controlling poor zeke to fight the guards were some of my favorite scenes!
anyways i knew the nat thing was going to go somewhere dark… kinda need that season 2 rn…
