What do you rate a doc where you love the subject but hate the filmmaking?
It is a fascinating story, that they did a good job laying out, but the directing and editing style felt very exploitive and overly dramatic.
First of all, I binged this in a night, it is a very gripping story. They do a good job keeping you engaged, and also keeping the story pretty tight. Unlike other crime docs I've seen where it feels that they stretch it out way too long, they delivered the right amount of information in a quick 4 episodes.
The doc just feels like it has no sympathy for its victims at times. Overlaying "WAAAAA"s over someone describing their grandma's murder isn't particularly necessary or kind. There's plenty of flashy editing, unnecessary closeups of a mouse (like why?), just a lot of really confusing intercuts that seem to be more concerned with keeping your attention than a respectful and honest telling of the story.
If you like true-crime, it's pretty effective and interesting. Worth checking out, but nothing particularly exceptional.
