“zeta gundam, kamille bidan, ikimasu!!”
this series has made me fall deeper in love with this franchise 😭😭. it has its flaws, of course, and some of the quirks of 80s anime, but the emotions i felt, in the 2 weeks i spent watching this, are unlike anything i’ve ever felt before. the complex characters, the colours, the immense world-building, the moral ambiguity, the mecha designs (i love the qubeley’s design so much omg). for a show made in 1985, this series is still so relevant today. it builds on the 1979 gundam so seamlessly, interweaving its characters so well into our cast of new characters. but it sucks how they gave sayla only one scene where she doesn’t even speak 😭 she was my favorite character in the first gundam series.
”hey once this war is over, things will return to what it was, like us going to school and fighting over nothing…won’t they?”
throughout both gundams, the anti-war messaging remains the same, that war benefits no one, and how the children and the younger generation suffer the most. we see this in the constant use of teen pilots, and the comedic relief children on the ships. the moral ambiguity of war is also emphasised, mainly through the character of char aznable, who we now follow as allies of the protagonist, rather than enemy.
“so people can understand each other!”
i love the concept of newtypes so much. it’s written with so much optimism for the future, a world where people have more empathy and understanding for each other. a place where differences don’t matter, and devoid of conflict, because we’re all members of the human race. i’ve always seen newtypes as a metaphor for queerness, because i think the acknowledgment of all our uniquenesses, nurtures empathy in our hearts. and to fear what you don’t even attempt to understand, is to be “pulled by the earth’s gravity”, just like the titans, finding comfort in conformity, and power over the weak, while weaponising the thing they don’t even deem normal. looking at newtypes, through the lens of how queerness is villainised in real life, resonate so much with the titans motive in zeta gundam.
“but you taught me how beautiful such honesty can be, that’s why i’m glad i was born into this world.”
with newtypes, we have another queer-coded concept. the doomed love that comes with the instant connection between newtypes. amuro, char, and lalah. jerid and lila. kamille and four. jerid and mouar. kamille and rosammy. katz and sarah. scirocco and sarah. scirocco and reccoa (although scirocco was basically just a manipulative jerk). this further emphasises that optimistic future, where love and human connection is abundant, without the need for hatred and war. one of my favorite moments is when four dies in kamille’s arms, while amuro and char look at him with sympathy and pity, because they have been through the same type of heartbreak before. newtypes suffer the most in war because of their heightened empathy and care, yet they are the most abused “weapon” in war.
“people will keep repeating the same mistakes.”
i love the franchise with all my heart 😭😭 i’m so excited to watch zz gundam now!!
