Owens films remind me of what is thought of when “modern art” is brought up.
A lot of colors and shapes that on the surface seem not to mean very much, but it is only when you dig deeper that you see its true meaning. However that’s the beauty of it, there is no one “true meaning,” especially not an obvious one, but rather the viewer is the one who decides what it’s abstraction represents to them.
It’s detractors will refuse to engage with it on anything deeper than a surface level and likely call it pretentious, meaningless, or not worth the praise that “art connoisseurs“ (i say that ironically) give it, but it’s those that choose to dig deeper, engage with it on a personal level, that will be rewarded with finding their own meaning in it and something to connect to.
I’d be a hack fraud if I said this and didn’t provide my own interpretation so here it is:
I see the short as having two different representations, one literal and one more figurative and thematic. For the literal one, I referenced the summary Owen provided in the description and saw this as the artistic manifestation of the angry out break of power and destruction by the telekinetic girl, the colors and shapes representing explosions and telekinesis waves or something. Figuratively though, I found more interesting. I saw this as a manifestation of what it feels like to be bullied and embarrassed but not know at all how to respond other than the emotions you are forced to feel. The anger, the anxiety, and the embarrassment all force your brain to shut down and are represented in this film by the waves crashing down, the shapes spiraling, and the cracks forming in the colors, just how it feels when you can’t think because you are so taken by the shitty emotions you are feeling and all your brain can do is sit there with all these emotions flowing through it in a way that it can’t process fast enough to fight back.Anyway, very cool stuff and I’m super excited to see what Owen does next, because while he may not share the same filmmaking sensibilities that I do, he definitely serves as a short filmmaker that is an inspiration to me, and this creative piece shows why. Also very very cool to use 16mm i’ve always wanted to try that in some way.
