Malcolm X
"We want freedom now, but we're not going to get it saying "We Shall Overcome." We've got to fight until we overcome."
Watched the Roadshow/WB Australian Blu-ray release. Beautiful transfer. I was considering getting the 4K but this and Memories of Murder's excellent release from Madman have me itching to buy more 1080p.
Deeply impactful film about a true icon, bolstered by a career-defining performance by one of the greatest actors of our time in Denzel Washington, and an incredible directorial effort from the legendary Spike Lee.
Most people will balk at the 3 hours and 22 minutes of runtime (I did, too), but the level of complexity that Malcolm is portrayed with warrants this hefty runtime. He is shown in his fullness, warts and all. Denzel gives one of the greatest acting performances of all time, which notably led to perhaps the most unbelievable Oscar snub in recent memory.
People don't acknowledge the visual beauty of this film enough. Every frame of this film is filled with beautiful colour and shot perfectly. One of the many highlights was Malcolm's pilgrimage to Mecca. So many beautiful moments that truly convey this beauty of believing in something higher that brings people together.
