Malcolm X
...by any means necessary!
I think if you were ever to transpose the idea of the Great American Novel to film and find one movie that was a true masterwork of American filmmaking, an epic drama that is the embodiment of what the history of the United States of America means to people as an essence and as a character, you'd be hard pressed to find a better choice than Malcolm X.
Okay, you can say Citizen Kane. I love that one too. If you must pick a Captain America it should be The First Avenger because that's the one I like best (so sorry to Winter Soldier truthers because I am not a fan!).
#7 on my Highest 2 Lowest watchlist, the final one before Highest 2 Lowest itself. Shoutout to Apple TV+!
One of our greatest living directors with some of our greatest living actors adapting the story of one of the most extraordinary men to ever live. The unsung hero is Ernest Dickerson, Spike's main cinematographer at the time. This film looks even better than it already did when viewed on 4K Blu-ray, with all the bells and whistles of the high bitrate and HDR support. The scenes of Malcolm during his Hajj pilgrimage shot inside Mecca itself are particularly stunning.
I think this is a prime example of the Devil's chickens coming home to roost. *The violence he's perpetrated in other countries, here and abroad...
**[...]
**I think this same violence has come back to claim one of their own.

Chickens coming home to roost never made me sad. In fact, it's only made me glad.*
