Malcolm X
We don't see any American Dream, we've experienced only the American Nightmare
It's the United States of America's 250th birthday, so what else better to watch than the greatest American film ever made – an unflinching depiction of America as a culture, an institution, an idea, a history and a people. The very definition of an American Epic. A complex, deeply layered and willingly imperfect portrayal of one of the most important men to walk the Earth. A gargantuan work of art that will live on as the magnum opus of one of our greatest living artists, the unquestionable icon that is Spike Lee. My favourite film ever made.
There is little to say about this that I haven't said before. The Dolby Vision grade did look truly incredible on my laptop screen. Ernest Dickerson is one of the greatest cinematographers to ever shoot a film. It cannot be overstated that Denzel Washington crafted perhaps the greatest performance to ever be put to screen. Even though he looks very little like the real man, it is as if his spirit had possessed Denzel, and as if his voice had taken over his body. A truly transcendent work of acting, one that will forever be remembered.
The day I watch this film in a movie theatre as opposed to my television set or my laptop is one that I deeply yearn for. I will be sitting in the theatre, wasting away in a puddle of my joy induced tears. And I sure hope it's sooner rather than later. Get on it Australian Cinémathèque at GOMA!
