Whore
To follow up my previous review, yes this still made me cry like a baby several times.
Also just noticed that despite directly addressing the camera and audience in her monologues, Liz has one that's internal where we only see her mull it over in her mind rather than visually vocalize for us: a recall of an assault she faced early in her career that she obviously blames on her own naïveté. This is juxtaposed directly after with a retelling of a story she's proud of: whipping an elderly man with a cane upstairs while his grandchildren are playing in the living room unaware.
Even on the 3rd watch, Russell is still giving me new things to find in his commentary on how society views women, especially those in sex work, and how those views shape how women can often view themselves.
Entering dangerous "spoke too soon about Crimes of Passion being my new favorite movie" territory. Whore (1991) stocks are climbing, that's for sure.
"Poor old whore... that could be me someday. Nah, I'd kill myself first."
