Phantom Thread
it simply is just one of those movies that i Adore.
when i found out phantom thread was directed and written by the same guy who wrote and directed there will be blood (already a favorite at that time) i sat down and wtached it and thought “ok?” after sitting with it for a bit.
and then it planted a seed. like most of my favorite movies i couldn’t stop thinking about it until i watched it again. i watched it a week later and felt chills every single time “house of woodcock” started playing.
the reason this movie stuck with me? the score and how amazing the two main characters and the one constant supporting character are.
daniel day lewis has two Amazing performances and i’ve only seen those two. he is in my top 10, maybe even top 5, actors just because of those two roles.
vicky krieps has such a dumb character in my opinion, but she makes it So much better than it could have been. alma could have been played as just this simple lady who loves how she feels in reynolds dresses and she wants to stay with reynolds because of that.
and lesley manville is absolutely great as cyril. my favorite scene is the one where alma is telling cyril her plans to surprise reynolds and cyril simply goes “he won’t like that.” earlier in the movie reynolds said “cyril is always right” and i yell it EVERY time that scene comes on.
but my favorite shot? the new years party where it’s no one the floor except for alma and reynolds. pta did the cinematography for this movie and it’s some of his best and very close to there will be blood.
and then there’s the score. it’s probably one of my favorites just because of how BEAUTIFUL every single song is.
then, there’s the biggest plot point, besides reynolds and alma’s relationship, the dresses. they look so amazing.
and the chemistry between alma and reynolds just starts off at going 100 and then dips and then goes right back 100. which is just how their relationship is going to be for their whole life and love that the movie shows this.
this is a romance that shows maybe one of the worst relationships, but it makes it look so beautiful at the end.
