Like Crazy
Really took my time with this one this time, paying very specific attention to each of the scenes. I stretched it out for weeks, making sure I pulled every ounce of meaning Doremus meant for it, and let me insist that there's a lot.
The most euphoric, sensual romanticism slams into harsh reality, with our cherub-like main characters having to not only deal with the common emotional consequences, but also a 9 hour time difference and the Atlantic Ocean. There's so much hurt, longing, confusion, dissimulation, and so much love, that by the end, as adults, there's no rational solution for it.
It declares firmly that what happens in love can't be explained, but that only feeling things like crazy matters, and that once you find it, you have to hold on to it. It's a devastating look at how real this kind of thing is. The camera gets in bed with them, watches months pass, and never shies away from the most heartbreaking expressions.
There's no reason this shouldn't be hailed as a masterpiece. Nothing else handles the perils of real feeling vs. reality like this does.
