Phantom Thread
This movie is so perfect. It’s one of the prettiest films ever shot, probably my favorite film score, and perfectly written. Paul Thomas Anderson is my favorite director, and while it isn’t the most grand statement in his filmography, it’s the one I think about the most. I’ve always thought of PTA to be the Radiohead of filmmakers (for many reasons, some of which are obvious) and this is his A Moon Shaped Pool. Personal, beautiful, pristine, and visceral.
Edit: I forgot to add that it’s straight up unbelievable that the second half of the asparagus scene was unscripted. Like, how? Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps killed that, and it’s criminal that Krieps didn’t get a nomination for this role.
