Phantom Thread
Kiss me, my girl, before I’m sick.
It takes great willpower for me to not rewatch this monthly. In my humble opinion, I really think that from a cinematic standpoint - this is the greatest achievement of at least the last 10 years. Possibly a larger timeframe, probably somewhere on the all-time list. It’s just so fucking beautiful. The shot of Reynolds and Alma dancing on New Years lives in my head rent free - probably my single favorite shot of all time.
Phantom Thread is told through montages and small gestures that give the characters a gorgeous space to live. There’s a certain level of subversion in here that’s brilliant, when you start to take note of things that bother Reynolds and all of a sudden buttering toast really does sound like a horse riding through the room. There are brief moments where you really think like Reynolds and start to understand him. Alma eventually adapts this too and honestly, is better than Reynolds at his own game. Very similar to The Age of Innocence in some ways.
So many all-time great scenes and line deliveries. I have a really hard time picking one favorite movie, but Phantom Thread is usually the picture I see whenever I ponder that.
