Dune
As much as I fucking adore Part Two, I find myself thinking more about Part One. The mysticism it brings, and the grand storytelling Denis and his visuals convey. Though I’m not a fan of the whole “part x over part y” debate, there’s just something about this one that makes me so incredibly sad, and in turn, makes me want to rewatch it again as soon as the credits start to roll. I think it has something to do with the book’s rhythm and how its plot develops. Part One is stepping into this world, exploring it and its politics, getting seduced by it little by little, things flowing slowly, and Part Two is the descent, a story that takes the forefront, time for choices and conflict, a game being played. It’s a perfect Grecian tragedy in the sense that it builds on its dread with each and every scene, and Part Two makes you think you’re going on a hero’s journey until it isn’t. It carries such a deep and powerful melancholy too. All the characters are kinda sad in their own rights, but you feel it even more in the score and the larger-than-life visuals and imagery that constantly remind you that these people inhabit an Empire many thousand years old that feels truly desolate at times. A society that has become completely stagnant. Truly, it’s full of wonder and magic. The early fragmented visions, the outstanding atmospheric score, and that feeling of dread you start to feel, all make it so fun to rewatch. I NEED this vibe for Messiah. It’s an absolute must. A lot of people would probably hate that, but I think it’s the only way to properly handle the book. I think (and hope) they will go down that route. After this entire trilogy is out, I think we will look back at Part Two as the (necessary) “loud” entry in the trilogy. I hope Messiah is sad as shit, confusing, and mystical as Part One. I NEED to see shots of Paul in a burning garden, and knowing Denis and how passionate he is about this world and the books, there’s a very good chance we’ll see these sequences, as well as the Moon falling sequence (one of my personal favorites). It makes me so miserable/excited to think of it on the big screen directed by Denis fucking Villeneuve.
