Wicked

💚🩷And just like that i’m healed. This story and these characters mean so much to me and this film (or experience atp) was everything. 💚🩷Last summer i had the opportunity to see the show on Broadway with the incredible Alyssa Fox and McKenzie Kurtz as Elphaba and Glinda and i have been changed for good. I started crying since the ensemble got on stage before “No one mourns the wicked”. What a day for theater kids. OFC i didn’t sing during the movie in theaters, but i did lip sync to every single song (i had Wicked in my spotify wrapped last year ofc i would do this). 💚🩷I also read the book earlier this month to prepare for the movie and it was… something. I love that they incorporated some elements from the book too, but i will always prefer the musical storyline. I did like the book too for showing a darker and more brutally real side of the story, but the stage show>> 💚🩷Can we talk about how this film had one of the best marketing campaign and press tour ever?? The whole world has turned green and pink in the past couple of months. And there is so much merch to buy from wicked clothes to wicked pasta. They really knew what they were doing. And all the movie premiers with the different Oz lands theaming and all the stunning outfits hit so hard. And the roblox game i can’t stop playing (i was literally in the cinema hall during the commercials before seeing the film and i opened the game to claim Elphaba’s broom cuz that’s when it came out) 💚🩷And of course we can’t forget the whole Shiz thing. I may not have gotten my Hogwarts letter at 11 but i did get admitted to Shiz at 17. And when the tiktok filter to find your Shiz roommate came out i got Fiyero and OMGG (more on him later). And ofc i signed up to a couple of clubs. No, unfortunately AI wasn’t very kind to my face in all my attempts to get a university ID, but the roblox game made me feel like i was actually a student there so it’s fine. 💚🩷I could talk for hours about how much i love the magical moral of this story and the diversity of the friend group and the overall Oz world. They really did a great job casting all the main actors to make as many people feel seen through them. 💚🩷Elphaba and Glinda are literally my two personalities. I guess i would say i’m more of a Glinda overall, because the best thing u know how to do at school is how to dress. And half the days i love dressing in all pink and being happy and coquette. While the other half of my life i’m an Elphaba wearing all black leather and having existential crisis about my life choices. 💚🩷Now, fellow ozians, the time has come to talk about Fiyero. Ever since i was a child my favorite Oz character was the Scarecrow (which has nothing to do with Fiyero i don’t know why i mentioned that). And just like all the girls and boys from Shiz i too fell in love with Fiyero when i saw him live performing “Dancing through life”. And to add to that you cast Jonny?? I never actually saw Jonny in a movie/show before watching Fellow Travelers earlier this month, but i always loved him a lot. He is such a great person (and i can confirm because i obviously know him personally) and he is always speaking up for people like me. And now he’s playing this bi king (or should i say prince) that i already was head over heels for. Oh and btw i think i actually fainted during “Dancing through life” 💚🩷As for Boq and Nessa my god to they hold a place in my heart too. Boq should be protected at all times! He is just a shy little boy (literally one of my personalities) and he deserves everything. And him and Nessa are SO CUTE together. She’s just an innocent soul leave her alone (she’ll become the wicked witch of the east in Part 2 but i don’t wanna think about that). And casting Marissa was such a wholesome choice and a step forward. 💚🩷It’s so obvious everyone involved in this loves Wicked and musical theater and that’s why this movie works. So thank you Jon Chu!! And my god Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh were great in their roles. I can’t reallt explain it, but Jeff’s Wizard does something to me… 💚🩷I don’t think i’ve cried so much during a movie in a long time (if ever). Obviously spoilers ahead!! The first time i cried (and i cried a lot) was when Glinda had to burn the witch “statue”. It always made me sad to think of the ending of the story and how Glinda loses everything but has to pretend to be happy that her best friend is dead for political reasons. And Ariana did an amazing job to see Glinda’s hidden pain in her eyes as she sings “No one mourns the wicked”. Then i cried at the Ozdust Ball scene (which btw is one of my favorite parts that was so incredibly done). That’s when Galinda has a change of heart and seeing her stand by and dance with Elphie was everything. I also cried during “I’m not that girl” (cuz that song is so me coded) and “A sentimental man” (i actually have no real reason for crying here, it’s just that i was in disbelief and happy at the same time that i’m finally watching this film after waiting for so much). And ofc the last time i cried was at the ending scene. JUST LEAVE MY GIRLS ALONE why does politics need to come between those bffs. 💚🩷And to think i was so emotional during this movie which is supposed to be fun and cute, while the actual tragic stuff happens in Part 2. And speaking of it the one (short day) thing i complain about is WHERE WAS THE FIELD SCENE from the trailers (the one with the whole group)?? We saw a glimpse of Elphie and Glinda from that scene at the beginning but i want the whole thing. Unless they wanna actually completely DESTROY me and keep it as a flashback to be a part of Part 2 after the friend group is… all over the place to say the least. 💚🩷I will keep this paragraph spoiler free but OMG THE SCENE WE ALL TRY TO PROTECT FROM SPOILING???? I wasn’t sure if it will actually happen and my god did my jaw drop when i saw it. And it wasn’t even a short thing it was a full scene. 💚🩷If this movie isn’t enough to bring practical sets back for good i don’t know what is. The world build was INCREDIBLE, one of the best parts of the film. Actually building these big sets such as Shiz or the Emerald City was so important to make the viewers feel like they also were in Oz. And don’t even get me started in all the costumes?? Oscars here comes Wicked to get Best production design and Best costume design. 💚🩷I don’t understand how some people watch 10 seasons long shows and hate it when a movie is around 3 hours long. Plus it didn’t even feel longer than an average 1.30h film. Every single scene was imported to the overall story and it was so enjoyable to watch that you easily forget about the duration (i didn’t even get to eat half of the popcorn cuz i was too much into the story) 💚🩷I could never say enough about how much this story and film mean to me, but i will watch it like 10 times during the next month so i’ll talk about everything that i missed here in those future reviews. But until i watch it again (aka tomorrow) i’ll sleep dreaming i was at Shiz and friends withe the group
