As of tomorrow the day I’m making this review, everybody I’ve grown close to over my entire childhood through high school years will be gone for college. I have 6 days until I leave and with absolutely nobody online I decided to throw on FLCL just to take time away from my college responsibilities and a time where I usually would be on call laughing and playing games with my friends. it turns out, it was just what I needed.
FLCL shows Naota, a boy who is growing up and engaging in the early aspects of puberty, only they’re represented in weird outlandish ways. This feeling of change that Naota is feeling, the change of his activities and daily lifestyle, is a change that is unnatural in his town where seemingly nothing happens. Haruko and many others believe that Naota doesn’t have what it takes to accept this change and exist in a new life full of it, to “swing the bat”. However, Naota perseveres and swings the bat to save his small town.
(It sounds off track but I promise it matters)
I’m going to a college 5 hours away in Wisconsin, and I’ve been dreading the day I leave. I know zero people going there and besides texting my roommate a little bit, I’m going to know nobody. This change was something I wasn’t going to be ready for, but FLCL teaches me that (while my situation isn’t puberty) change is scary, unwanted, and confusing. You need to be comfortable with this change in order to continue on the right path in life. You need to swing the bat.
It’s what FLCL stands for. The experience of growing up. Nonsensical, extreme, crazy, and dumb. The term Fooly Cooly doesn’t even mean anything man. There is full on a scene where Naota looks back at the camera and goes “are you understanding any of this” and to that I say no. Nobody understands any of this, nobody understands growing up and getting these responsibilities and having to deal with change, and that’s okay.
I might be looking too deep into stupid short gainax anime but I don’t think I’m looking deep enough.
With the most stylistic animation, the best needle drops of all time, and some damn good impressive fight choreography, FLCL takes the cake as my absolute favorite coming of age piece of media, and is now in a battle for my four favorites.
Also fuck adult swim for making like 4 shitty ass spin offs. Respect the source material.
